Shoes

In Tudor times shoes were thrown at the newly weds for good luck and it was concerned lucky if they are there carriage was hit by them. Today they are more often tied to the back of the car from which they depart the reception.

When a father gives a pair of his daughter’s shoes to his new son-in-law custom has it that he is passing on responsibility for her. Another custom claims that if the groom taps his new wife on the forehead with one of the shoes he is asserting his dominance over her.

Many grooms are seen to write the words HELP on the bottom of their shoe and perhaps this will become a custom of the future.
