The partner who makes the first new purchase after the wedding is said to be the most dominant in the new relationship. One tradition holds that to ensure the bride is the dominant and lucky partner she should have her attendant or chief bridesmaid carry a small item, such as a pin, which can be purchased immediately following the ceremony.
